Washington, D.C. â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this afternoon in response to President Bush’s speech today at the FBI training academy on terrorism:

â€Å"Protecting America from terrorism requires more than just resolve, it requires a plan. As we have seen in Iraq, planning is not the Administration’s strong suit.

â€Å"The 9/11 intelligence reform legislation the President signed into law last December directed the Department of Homeland Security to create a national strategy for transportation security by April 1. That date came and went with no plan â€" only an empty promise by the Administration to comply by July 1. Congress and the American people are still waiting for the Administration’s plan.

â€Å"After failing to meet both deadlines, the Administration needs to make homeland security a higher priority in terms of resources and in terms of effort. Until the President resolves to do that, Americans will not be as safe as they should be.

â€Å"Democrats will continue to push for common-sense measures to protect America from terrorism by making the necessary investments in port and transit security, protecting our nuclear and chemical plants, and fully equipping our first responders.”
