Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on the new consumer protections in the “Patient’s Bill of Rights” that go into effect today, the sixth month anniversary of the Affordable Care Act:

“The Patient’s Bill of Rights breaks the stranglehold insurance companies have had over our health care decisions and puts power into the hands of the American people, where it belongs.

“For children, for young people, for seniors, for those with serious conditions now or in the future, and for those who seek to maintain health through preventive care, we are moving forward. These new consumer protections end some of the worst insurance company abuses and — combined with tax cuts for millions of small businesses if they voluntarily choose to offer coverage — represent six months of progress toward the goal of health insurance reform: affordability, accessibility, and accountability.

“Republicans who argue in favor of repealing this legislation want to strip Americans of these protections and move our nation backward. We will not go back.”
