Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama announced that the United States and Russia will sign a new START treaty next month to reduce nuclear weapons:
"The President’s announcement of the New START treaty marks another critical step forward in our march to create a world free of nuclear weapons. This comprehensive arms control agreement is a sign of progress for the peace and security of all nations and the future of people across the globe.
"This announcement reflects the need to act responsibly in the global community and to lead through cooperation. Under the provisions of this proposal, the United States and Russia will reduce the size of their nuclear stockpiles – discarding relics of an era defined by fear and mistrust, and replacing them with a commitment to mutual interests and partnership. This treaty includes measures to verify that both nations uphold their commitments and hold each side accountable for their actions.
"The United States and Russia have an obligation to lead the drive for non-proliferation. As the President said nearly one year ago: ‘We must stand together for the right of people everywhere to live free from fear in the 21st century.’ With today’s steps, we are moving closer to reaching that goal.
"I applaud the work, vision, and leadership of President Obama, Secretary of State Clinton, and Secretary of Defense Gates to make this agreement a reality."
