Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Caucus Vice Chairman Joe Crowley, Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Nita Lowey, and Congressman Rush Holt met with President U Thein Sein of Burma and his delegation.

“President Thein Sein’s visit to the United States is a recognition of the steps that have been taken to promote democracy and economic and political reform,” Pelosi said. “It is essential that the appropriate political reforms move forward, prior to the 2015 election, so that Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League of Democracy Party can fully participate in a democratic process. In addition, there are serious concerns about the escalation of the military attacks in the Kachin State and the violence against the Rohingya Muslim community. It is my hope that this visit will be productive in advancing peace, democracy, and stability in Burma.”
