Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this morning after the Department of Labor released its employment report for September showing a loss of another 159,000 American jobs, bringing the total number of jobs lost this year to 760,000:

"The House will act today on the economic rescue package as well as an extension of unemployment benefits for Americans who are struggling through these tough economic times. We must pass these critical measures to pull our economy back from the precipice and to give workers our help and support as they continue to look for jobs.

"Nine straight months of job losses is a painful verdict on the economic mismanagement of the last eight years. Americans are working harder than ever but their paychecks do not stretch to cover the rising cost of gas, groceries, and health care. We cannot afford a continuation of the failed economic policies that have resulted in these job losses here at home.

"Democrats are working to provide a New Direction for our economy that will strengthen and grow the middle class by helping to create good paying jobs, and renew the American Dream for all. We will act on these critical measures this afternoon to get our economy on more solid footing."
