Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today after Congress sent to the President H.R. 1195, bipartisan legislation to help promote 40,000 American jobs in transportation and construction:

"The bipartisan transportation legislation Congress sent the President today will help create and support 40,000 good paying American jobs. This represents our down payment on a new commitment to renewing America's infrastructure, which will continue with the reauthorization of the highway bill next year.

"The New Direction Congress is committed to growing our economy, creating good paying jobs, strengthening America's families, preserving our planet and promoting energy independence - all of which can be furthered through rebuilding our infrastructure. The challenge of our crumbling infrastructure is an opportunity to think in new and innovative ways to strengthen our nationĂ¢â‚¬"and the jobs and backbone for future commerce this bill creates are a good first step."
