Pelosi Condemns Broadcast of ‘Tsunami Song’

January 26, 2005

Washington, D.C. â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to reports of the production and broadcast of the â€Å"Tsunami Song” by a New York radio station. The song makes light of the devastation caused by the recent earthquake and tsunamis in South Asia. The staff responsible for the song were suspended indefinitely.

â€Å"On December 26, 2004, the world witnessed the destructive power of nature with the earthquake and tsunamis that swept across Asia. More than 160,000 lives have been lost as a result of this unspeakable tragedy. Millions have been displaced or made homeless. The memory of this loss and devastation leaves a wound that may never completely heal. We join with the people of the affected countries in their continued sorrow and stand with them in the effort to rebuild and renew.

â€Å"There is no conceivable way in which this tragedy can be viewed that would make it an appropriate cause for levity. Those in the public domain who would mock the victims of this terrible disaster disgrace our pact with one another as global citizens. Those who would use disaster as an opportunity to spread intolerance must be held accountable for their actions.

â€Å"Now is the time for all Americans to demonstrate the best that the human spirit has to offer. Our response must continue to be one of unwavering and steadfast compassion. Indefinitely suspending the employees responsible for the ‘Tsunami Song’ was an appropriate first step.”
