Washington, D.C. â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today commending Justice Sandra Day O’Connor for her public service as she retires from the Unite States Supreme Court:
â€Å"I extend my good wishes to Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on her retirement and commend her long and distinguished public service. As the first female Supreme Court justice and the first woman to serve as a state Senate majority leader of a state, Justice O’Connor broke barriers for women everywhere. By serving with honor and distinction, she has been an inspiration to all Americans.
â€Å"Justice O’Connor played an indispensable and pivotal role in preserving our civil liberties and Constitutional rights, including a women’s right to choose. Her voice of reason extended to numerous critical rulings, including affirmative action and campaign finance reform.
â€Å"As the President nominates a successor, he has an opportunity to unify the country by seeking meaningful consultation with legislators of both parties and by choosing a respected nominee in the manner of Sandra Day O’Connor. The President should seek a nominee who will preserve our civil liberties, maintain the independence of the judiciary, and protect and defend the Constitution of the United States that Justice O’Connor did so well.â€Â
