San Francisco, CA - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this afternoon today at a field hearing of the House committee on government reform subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources regarding ?National Parks of California?.
?I'm pleased to offer my warm welcome as you begin this afternoon?s hearing on California?s national parks.?
?I take great pride in San Francisco?s magnificent national parks: Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Presidio, and San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.?
?Across the Bay Area, our parks offer an incredible array of natural and cultural resources for our residents and visitors to enjoy. I commend Congressman Mark Souder of Indiana for his commitment to preserving and enhancing the national parks. As chairman of this committee, as well as co-chair of the National Parks Caucus with Congressman Brian Baird of Washington state, he has raised awareness about the pressing needs of our national parks.?
?Protecting our national parks and cultural treasures provides a national trust for future generations. I will continue to be strongly committed to preserving the historic and national integrity in our nation's parks. We must conserve our country's magnificent scenic beauty and societal history for our grandchildren.?
?Several of our national parks? champions are with us today. My congratulations to Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey along with Daphne Kwok, who will provide testimony today, for their great leadership in passing a bill to help secure funds for preserving and restoring the Angel Island Immigration Station in the San Francisco Bay.?
?Brian O?Neill, Superintendent of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), has brought an unrivaled level of innovation and ingenuity to his work. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, led by Greg Moore, has provided the GGNRA with remarkable support, providing a model for park partner organizations around the country.?
