San Francisco -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after San Francisco was announced as the host city for the 34th America's Cup sailing race in 2013:

“As one of the world's most beautiful and prestigious waterfront cities, San Francisco is the perfect choice to host one of the world's premier sporting events – the America's Cup. With today’s announcement, citizens of the world will gather to view sleek, state-of-the-art sailing ships complimented with the spectacular backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco skyline.

“This event will inject more than $1 billion to our city's economy: creating jobs and invigorating local businesses, as well as rejuvenate aging piers that will spur further economic development in San Francisco.

“Thank you to Larry Ellison for his vision for a San Francisco America's Cup and to Mayor Gavin Newsom to his dedicated efforts to make it a reality for our city.”
