Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a letter today to Speaker John A. Boehner requesting that he urge Republican House committee chairmen to “move expeditiously to pass” the American Jobs Act and begin putting the country back to work. Yesterday, Leader Pelosi wrote to each Democratic Ranking Member calling on them to urge the chairman of his or her committee to take immediate legislative action on President Obama’s proposals to create jobs.

Below is the full text of today’s letter:

September 9, 2011

The Honorable John A. Boehner
Speaker of the House
United States House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Mr. Speaker:

Last night, President Obama called for immediate action by the Congress to pass the American Jobs Act. Independent analysis estimates that its enactment would result in nearly two million jobs in 2012.

The Congress should act quickly and in a bipartisan way to promote jobs. I was encouraged by your statement that, “The proposals the President outlined tonight merit consideration,” and your “hope that we can work together to … create a better environment for long-term economic growth and private-sector job creation.”

I have asked each Democratic Ranking Member to urge his or her Committee chair to schedule immediate hearings and legislative action on legislation proposed by the President that lies within the jurisdiction of the Committee. It would be a sign of our unified commitment to acting quickly, and to acting in a bipartisan way, if you would similarly urge your chairmen to move expeditiously to pass this legislation and begin creating jobs, assisting small businesses, supporting veterans, and promoting economic growth.

You have my promise of support from Democrats in moving rapidly to consider the American Jobs Act and additional proposals that achieve our jobs and growth goals responsibly and effectively.

Thank you for your attention.

best wishes,

Nancy Pelosi
