Pelosi, Bipartisan Congressional Leaders Meet with Indian Prime Minister and other Indian Leaders

New Delhi, India -- U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a bipartisan congressional delegation held discussions Thursday with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other Indian leaders aimed at strengthening U.S.-Indian ties. Topics included terrorism, the climate crisis, the situation in Tibet, and the pending civilian nuclear treaty.

The delegation held meetings on climate change and sustainable energy policy with Nobel Laureate Dr. R.K. Pachauri and other global warming experts from New Delhi's famed TERI program, and with the special envoy for Climate Change, Shyam Seran. The discussion focused particularly on the role of developing nations in reducing greenhouse gases.

The delegation also placed a wreath at the Raj Ghat memorial, located on the site of Mahatma Gandhi's cremation on January 31, 1948.

"All Americans appreciate the significance of Gandhi's principle of non-violence to our own civil rights movement," Pelosi said.

The delegation travels on Friday to Dharamsala, India, home to the Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetan refugees.

In addition to Pelosi, the congressional delegation includes the Chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, Edward Markey of Massachusetts, Ranking Member James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, Chairman of the House Democratic Policy Committee George Miller of California, and Representatives Jim McDermott of Washington, Eleanor Holmes Norton of the District of Columbia, Anna Eshoo of California, Jay Inslee of Washington, Rush Holt of New Jersey and Hilda Solis of California.
