Pelosi Applauds Agreement to End CPMC Strike, Commends Giraudo

Thursday, November 10, 2005

San Francisco â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today regarding the tentative contract settlement between SEIU â€" United Healthcare Workers West and California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) and St. Luke’s Hospital. If ratified by workers, the contract will end the nine-week strike at CPMC and avert a strike at St. Luke’s:

"I am pleased to join civic leader Lou Giraudo in announcing a tentative agreement on the contract between SEIU and California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) and St. Luke’s Hospital.

"This agreement would not have been possible without the excellent work of Lou Giraudo who has the trust of CPMC and SEIU. I commend his tireless efforts to bring the parties together and facilitate negotiations.

"This strike has dragged-on for almost nine weeks, and I have been very concerned about its impact on CPMC's patients and the workers who care for them.

"Earlier this week, Mr. Giraudo and I called the parties back to the bargaining table to resolve their differences and end this strike, for the good of the patients, the workers, and our City. I was encouraged about the prospects for settlement because CPMC CEO Dr. Martin Brotman and SEIU President Sal Rosselli have the health care of the patients as their first priority.

"I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the bargaining teams â€" the caregivers and their union representatives led by Sal Rosselli, and the CPMC management led by Dr. Martin Brotman. I am confident that this agreement will bring a new spirit of partnership and collaboration, and will result in high quality care for patients and improved conditions for workers."
