Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced her guests for this evening's address to a Joint Session of Congress by President Donald Trump:
“Tonight, President Trump will deliver his address to a chamber Democrats have filled with the victims of his assault on America,” said Leader Pelosi. “It is my honor to have two exceptional San Francisco constituents as my guests. Mattie Scott turned her grief at her son’s murder into a decades-long fight to confront the tragedy of gun violence that President Trump will not address. Jose Antonio Vargas personifies the courage and patriotism of the immigrants who now face a cruel deportation dragnet from an Administration blind to their vast contributions to our country.”
Mattie Scott – In July, 1996, Mattie Scott’s youngest son, George C. Scott, 24, father of two young sons, was killed by gun violence in their Western Addition neighborhood in San Francisco. After her son’s murder, Mattie has worked in her community to get guns out of the wrong hands and help families heal from the epidemic of gun violence. She founded and runs Healing 4 Our Families & Our Nation, a non-profit advocacy group, and is the President of Brady Campaign’s San Francisco Chapter.
Jose Antonio Vargas – Jose Antonio Vargas is a journalist and filmmaker, and serves as the CEO of Define American and #EmergingUS. Jose was part of The Washington Post team that won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting for coverage of the Virginia Tech shooting. In 2010, Vargas revealed his undocumented immigration status in an article in The New York Times Magazine. He went on to produce and direct his autobiographical documentary, Documented, broadcasted by CNN, and later directed MTV’s White People. Today he continues to use his work to encourage people to ask newer, tougher questions when discussing immigration and identity.
