Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the Army Corps of Engineers fiscal year 2018 Workplan included a New Start Investigation feasibility study for the San Francisco Waterfront, one of only six New Start Investigations selected nationwide in a highly competitive process:
“Over a century old, San Francisco’s Embarcadero Seawall underpins many of our most iconic and popular destinations, with millions of annual visitors and more than $100 billion in assets and economic activity.  Today’s selection of the Seawall is a crucial first step in the Army Corps process of determining federal interest that can lead to significant federal funding to repair and upgrade the seawall to withstand the next major earthquake and provide vital flood protection from sea level rise.  It was my privilege to fight in the Congress to ensure robust Corps civil works funding, and to advocate along with the Port of San Francisco for the Seawall to be selected by the Corps so we can protect downtown San Francisco and ensure the survival of our treasured Embarcadero.”
