Pelosi Announces $15 Million for Bay Area Electric Vehicle Charging Network

January 9, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced that the San Francisco Bay Area will soon receive $15 million in new federal funding to deploy 1,600 publicly accessible electric vehicle (EV) charging ports.  This funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration under President Joe Biden’s historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

“This federal funding from President Biden’s Infrastructure Law is an important step to help save the planet: building an accessible network of electric vehicle charging ports across the Bay Area,” Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said.  “The San Francisco Bay Area leads the nation in electric vehicle use, and this new funding will give families confidence that there will be a place to charge their electric vehicle where we live and work – particularly in disadvantaged communities.  By strengthening modern and sustainable electric vehicle infrastructure in the Bay Area and across America, we are accelerating our transition to cleaner economy, reducing pollution in our communities and helping fight the climate crisis.”

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District will use this new funding to create a more robust, accessible and equitable electric vehicle charging network across nine counties in the San Francisco Bay Area.  The project will add approximately 1,600 EV charging ports with an emphasis on serving disadvantaged communities.

The Federal Highway Administration is making historic investments to strategically deploy publicly accessible electric vehicle charging across America.  The San Francisco Bay Area Electric Vehicle Charging Project was selected to receive funding from a competitive national grant program.
