Tokyo – Today, His Imperial Majesty the Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe presented Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun Award in recognition of her "significant contribution to strengthening and deepening" U.S.-Japan relations.
While Speaker of the House, Pelosi made a historic visit to Japan becoming the highest-ranking, sitting U.S. official to visit and lay a wreath at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Leader Pelosi co-sponsored the Civil Liberties Act to address the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II and presented the U.S. Government's official apology along with offers of restitution to those who were interned. She has also led efforts to honor Japanese-Americans who served in the armed forces during the Second World War and helped create affordable housing for families living in San Francisco's historic Japantown.
"More than one century ago, the Japanese people presented the capital of the United States with the Sakura. Each Spring, these cherry blossoms are a beautiful reminder of our friendship. Seventy years after the end of World War II, the United States and Japan have worked together to build a more peaceful and prosperous world," Leader Pelosi said. "I am deeply grateful and honored by this award, which will hold a place of pride and prominence in my heart – and to the people of San Francisco."
Established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji of Japan, the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun was the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese Government. Awarded to individuals who have made distinguished achievements in international relations, this honor is one of the highest orders bestowed by the Japanese government and the highest conferred at the ceremony held today.
