What about Jobs?

Pelosi Update

What About Jobs?
After 283 days in the majority, House Republicans have yet to pass a single bill to put Americans back to work. Instead of voting on the American Jobs Act and the bipartisan China currency legislation and creating more than 2.9 million new jobs, the House passed legislation that would restrict, for the first time, how women with private insurance can spend their own private dollars in purchasing health insurance. This bill is part of a package of extreme legislation that Republican leaders are prioritizing instead of focusing on the number one concern of the American people – the creation of jobs.

The American Jobs Act focuses squarely on putting people back to work; strengthening small businesses so they can grow and hire; rebuilding America’s roads, bridges, and schools; and keeping teachers, firefighters, and police officers on the job. The plan is fully paid for, adding nothing to the deficit.

My Democratic colleagues and I are committed to strengthening our small businesses, revitalizing our economy and leveling the playing field with China and other trading partners. Our big, bold, and balanced initiatives will create new well-paying jobs, strengthen the middle class, and reduce the deficit. Congress must work to pass legislation that supports economic growth and long-term job creation, providing economic security to all Americans.

Confronting our Past for a Better Future
Today, I joined my California colleague, Congresswoman Judy Chu, in cosponsoring H. Res. 282, a bill to recognize and apologize for the Chinese Exclusion Act and other discriminatory laws passed between 1882 and 1904 that violated the civil rights of Chinese-America settlers.

Last week this resolution, cosponsored by Senator Feinstein, passed the Senate unanimously and I am hopeful that Speaker Boehner will change his mind and bring this resolution up for a vote in the House of Representatives. San Francisco is blessed by a large and vibrant Chinese-American community. This resolution confronts the truth of the Chinese exclusion laws; reaffirming our commitment to preserving civil rights for all Americans.
