Uniting Against Cuts to Medicare and Social Security
Uniting Against Cuts to Medicare and Social Security
On Tuesday, I was proud to join other Democratic women Members of Congress in calling for a balanced agreement to reduce the deficit that strengthens Medicare and Social Security for beneficiaries while doing no harm to the economy. As primary caregivers and health providers, women are disproportionally affected by cuts to these crucial programs. In San Francisco alone, over 45,950 women depend on Social Security to put food on the table and make ends meet.
Unfortunately, as we near the August 2nd deadline, failure to raise the debt ceiling would mean that many women are in danger of losing this crucial source of income. Even more disturbing, the withholding of Social Security checks is just one of the many consequences the United States could face if it defaults on its debt. Coming to a bipartisan agreement to cut spending and ensure that the U.S. is able to uphold its commitments, is crucial to our financial security.

House Democrats stand strong against Republican attempts to cut funding for Medicare and Social Security while shielding the wealthiest Americans from paying their fair share. Congress will not sacrifice these vital pillars of economic and health security of our society and our economy in order to give tax breaks to the wealthy, Big Oil, and corporations that send jobs overseas. We are committed to a balanced, bipartisan approach to the budget resolution that is fair to the middle class, honors the dignity of our seniors and their retirement, creates jobs, and educates our children while reducing the deficit.
Protecting our Most Vital Resource
Instead of acting to create jobs and strengthen our economy, this week House Republicans focused instead on passing H.R. 2018, a bill that repeals clean water protections that ensure the safety of the water Americans drink and in which they swim and fish. Nearly 40 years ago, the bipartisan Clean Water Act revolutionized the safety of American water. It gave a measure of confidence to families, that they can protect their children from toxins and pollutants. Instead of rolling back protections for our most vital resource, Congress should focus on bringing stability to our economy and putting Americans back to work.
Casework News
Recently, my office helped a San Francisco Boys Chorus student who required assistance with a passport issue to participate in a tour to Canada, Europe, and Russia. We were able to quickly receive a court order from a local sitting judge to qualify for a passport, allowing the student to tour with the rest of the chorus. My best wishes as the chorus completes its tour.
