Time is Running Out

June 21, 2013
Pelosi Update

The Clock is Ticking
The clock is ticking on this Congress, with little to show for it. It has been 170 days since the start of the new Congress and the House has not passed a single jobs bill and has refused to work towards a budget agreement.

With 10 days left to keep college affordable for America's students and middle class families, if Congress fails to act by July 1st student loan interest rates will double, putting college well out of reach for millions of students. Hardworking families already carry $1 trillion in student loan debt – and we must act to ease, not exacerbate, that burden.

Last month, Republicans voted for their "Make College More Expensive Act" to saddle students and families with higher interest payments for their loans. Time is running out. To strengthen our economy, our middle class, and our future, Congress should work together to prevent interest rates from doubling now. We must ensure the success of America by ensuring the success and education of America’s students.

Instead of bringing up bills to create jobs or protect our students, the House GOP spent its time passing legislation that endangers women’s health and that disrespects the judgment of the American women and their doctors on how to make judgments about their health. Leading groups of medical professionals and experts across the country believe that this legislation is dangerous and wrong. Each day they claim they want to reduce the role of government except when it comes to women’s most personal decisions about their reproductive health. It is yet another attempt to endanger women. It is disrespectful to women. It is unsafe for families and it is unconstitutional.

Congresswoman Pelosi calls on the House to act quickly to keep student loan rates from doubling on July 1st.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform: Good for Our Economy
Tuesday offered more evidence that comprehensive immigration reform is good for our economy, good for deficit reduction, good for our workforce, and good for the future of our country. Indeed, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office makes it clear: reform would expand growth, boost GDP, increase capital investment, and raise productivity. This cost estimate strengthens the case for fixing our broken immigration system with commonsense steps to secure our borders, protect our workers, unite families, and offer an earned pathway to citizenship.

The American people support comprehensive immigration reform; bipartisan leaders in Congress are working to advance the cause of reform; and now, we have even greater proof that this measure will mark a significant step forward for our nation. The time is now to enact comprehensive legislation that preserves our values, reflects the character of our country, and strengthens our democracy.
