Pelosi Update

Time is Running Out
Standing with President Obama, Democrats' principles have been clear: we support a balanced plan to address deficit reduction that creates jobs, grows the economy, and protects crucial investments in our future. As Members from both parties work together toward an agreement, Congress can act now to ensure job creation by extending the middle class tax cuts without further delay:

  • The Senate has already passed the bill.
  • House Democrats are ready to vote for it.
  • The President is prepared to sign it into law.

If House Republicans continue to hold the middle income tax cuts hostage, House Democrats will file a discharge petition this coming Tuesday – forcing Congress to vote on this critical measure. Acting on the middle income tax relief will put money in the pockets of consumers just as we approach the holiday season. Congress must take action to offer security and stability to the middle class while asking the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share. There is no time to waste.

Recognizing World AIDS Day
Saturday marks the 19th annual World AIDS Day. On World AIDS Day, we recommit to prevention, testing, treatment, and finding a cure. On the brink of an AIDS-free generation, we cannot let up in our fight against HIV/AIDS.

Over the last 31 years, we have learned that AIDS is a very resourceful virus that escapes defeat by mutating. So too did we have to become resourceful in our efforts to fight it. We have been innovative in our thinking: pursuing new science, mobilizing in new ways, and taking new opportunities wherever we have seen them. San Francisco was ground zero for AIDS’ assault and we have led the way in developing community-based solutions to it. It is a source of pride to many of us that the United States led an international mobilization against AIDS and made a national decision to fight the disease here at home.

On World AIDS Day, let us come together to renew our call to fight this global pandemic and strengthen our commitment to helping those affected by HIV/AIDS. To learn more about my work fighting HIV/AIDS, please visit my website.

A Common Bond
The U.S. and Mexico are separated by a border, but we share so much in common – our values of faith, family, and love of our respective countries. On Wednesday, I was pleased to meet with Mexico’s President-Elect, Enrique Peña Nieto. House Democrats look forward to working with the President-Elect to strengthen our border communities, fight organized crime, and tackle our economic, immigration, energy and environmental challenges. Relations with Mexico are of utmost importance to our country, as we are blessed with a dynamic and diverse Latino community with millions of immigrants from Mexico. May our bonds of friendship forever run deep and our mutual respect remain strong.
