The Recovery Act at Work in San Francisco:Touring the Historic Tenderloin YMCA Housing Development
Since his first day in office, President Obama has called for action to create jobs and revitalize our economy. Two years ago today, the House of Representatives answered his call with the passage of the Recovery Act – creating or saving over 3 million jobs across the nation.

As President Obama reminded us in his State of the Union address, we can win the future if we “out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world.” Our focus on jobs and our economic prosperity must – and will – continue.

San Francisco, always a leader in innovation, was ready to take advantage of the opportunities in the Recovery Act. This morning, I was pleased to witness the results of our federal investments on a tour of the historic Tenderloin YMCA housing development, which received $54 million from the Recovery Act and will generate 390 jobs in San Francisco.

This project – which includes 174 renovated housing units for chronically homeless individuals and on-site support services such as a health clinic – will be a place for our neighbors to get back on their feet, lead a secure and healthy life, and build a better future. Here in the heart of the Tenderloin, two years after the House passed the Recovery Act, we are still seeing the way smart, strategic investments are creating jobs and transforming communities.

The President has outlined a Sputnik-type commitment to the entrepreneurial spirit of the American people, through which we can lead the world in innovation, secure energy independence and create clean energy jobs, and strengthen small businesses. That plan can build a broad-based prosperity that will ensure economic security for our children. As we continue to fight for more jobs and a stronger middle class nationwide, we are laying the foundation for prosperity, growth, and opportunity right here in San Francisco.

Casework Corner
As an example of one of the many ways my office is able to help constituents who have individual situations with the federal government, one of my caseworkers in San Francisco helped a constituent who had been dropped from her Medicare coverage. After my office helped her to contact the appropriate federal agency, her health benefits were reinstated.
