The Beauty is in the Mix
The Beauty is in the Mix
The AAPI community—the fastest-growing population in the U.S. – will continue to help shape our nation and define its future. This month in particular we celebrate their rich contributions and diverse cultures. On Monday, I was honored to participate in a roundtable to hear from Asian and Pacific Islander leaders and to discuss the detrimental impact of the Republican budget on the AAPI community.
In our discussion, I heard about the importance of the Affordable Care Act, college affordability measures, and the need for investments in job creation. Sadly, the Republican budget repeals the Affordable Care Act, eliminates Pell Grants for 400,000 students and destroys more than four million jobs, all while giving a tax cut of nearly $400,000 to people making more than a million dollars per year and protecting tax breaks for special interests and Big Oil. The Republican budget also ends the Medicare guarantee, which AAPI seniors rely on more than the general population. Of the 900,000 AAPI seniors enrolled in Medicare, over 34% have no other supplemental insurance. Democrats believe we must enact a budget that reflects our nation’s values of fairness and opportunity, and puts the American dream in reach for every American.

Investing in the Future
A competitive, 21st century economy demands a bold vision and a strong infrastructure. Investing in high-speed rail across the country has been a priority for Democrats in Congress; we led the charge to dedicate more than $10 billion to projects since 2009 because we know that expanding rail is critical to rebuilding America.
On Thursday, I was pleased to deliver remarks at the California High Speed Rail Conference in San Francisco. In California, leaders have put forward a plan premised on the promise of public-private partnerships – a central facet of our economic growth – combining initial commitments from government with private capital. The plan will bring capital, commuters, and commerce to the center of the city of San Francisco, as we look forward to the day when riders will board high-speed trains at our own Transbay Transit Center, the “Grand Central Station of the West.”
The Golden Gate Bridge Turns 75
Built in the midst of the Great Depression, the Golden Gate Bridge is a reminder that, no matter how daunting the challenge or how overwhelming the obstacle, America always invests in big things and bold endeavors. On Sunday, we mark the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge; a faithful companion for San Franciscans, a source of pride for Californians and a national treasure for all Americans. Honoring our Military
On Memorial Day, we honor those who gave their lives so we can be the land of the free and the home of the brave. Throughout our history, the members of our armed forces have fought to establish a nation, to preserve our union, to defend democracy and defeat tyranny on distant shores. In Congress, we must continue to ensure that the deeds of our service members are remembered in the actions of our lawmakers. We must continue to uphold our solemn pledge: just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind at home.
