Supporting our Small Businesses
Last Thursday, I was pleased to join local Latino small business owners at Mission Language and Vocational School in the Mission District for a roundtable to discuss ways to strengthen small businesses, empower entrepreneurs, and create jobs. As a part of our “Make It In America” initiative, my Democratic colleagues and I have met with over 2,000 of our nation’s small business owners; learning directly from the backbone of American jobs, growth, and innovation how Congress can best help local entrepreneurs grow and hire.

A key way to achieve our goals and boost our economy is to pass President Obama’s American Jobs Act. For small businesses, the American Jobs Act means tax cuts across the board and a tax cut to any business that hires or increases wages:

  • Cutting the payroll tax in half for 98 percent of businesses.
  • Complete payroll tax holiday for added workers or increased wages.
  • Extending 100 percent expensing into 2012.
  • Reforms and regulatory reductions to help entrepreneurs and small businesses access capital.

Serving our Veterans
On Wednesday, I toured the new veteran dormitory expansion at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center in South of Market. At the Harbor Light Center, the Salvation Army helps veterans facing homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges receive the vital services they need to get back on their feet. In Congress, our work is founded on a solemn promise: just as the military pledges to leave no soldier behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind when they return home. With this new dormitory, Harbor Light can continue to serve our veterans who have sacrificed and served abroad so that we can know safety at home.

Observing National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Friday is National Mammography Day. On this day, and throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women at risk for the disease are encouraged to make a mammography appointment and learn more about what they can do to prevent and detect breast cancer.

As we observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month we remember loved ones lost and recommit ourselves to advancing prevention, improving treatments, and funding research that can save women’s lives and, one day, defeat this devastating disease. To find out if you are at risk for breast cancer, please visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website.
