Supporting Marriage Equality, Reducing Student Costs
Supporting Marriage Equality
This week marked an historic moment of progress for the civil rights of LGBT Americans and all Americans. By declaring his support for marriage equality, President Obama spoke to the values of people of faith, of families, of our nation. With the President’s support, we look forward to the day when all American families are treated equally in the eyes of the law.
Throughout American history, we have worked to live up to our values of liberty and freedom, and to end discrimination in all of its forms. On Wednesday, we took another step forward in our march toward our American ideal of equality, our heritage and our hope.
Reducing Student Costs
Time is running out for Congress to act to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling on more than 7 million students. In 2007, Democratic majorities in the House and Senate came together to pass legislation to reduce student costs and provide new protections to ensure that families can continue to access the loans they need to pay for college. Now, House Republicans must join Democrats as we continue our work to keep college affordable for America’s middle class.
Congresswomen Pelosi thanks Chen Guangcheng for his courage and dedication to fighting for legal and human rights in China.
Honoring Chen Guangcheng
On Tuesday, I was honored to speak with Chinese lawyer and human rights activist Chen Guangcheng. During the call, I thanked him for his courage in fighting for legal and human rights in China. Secretary Clinton and the Obama Administration are to be commended for engaging the Chinese government at the highest levels to try to produce an outcome that honors the values of our nation.
