Strengthening the Middle Class, Improving our Community

Pelosi Update

Strengthening the Middle Class
House Republican leaders continue to protect people making more than a million dollars a year while risking a $1,000 tax hike on the middle class and the loss of at least 400,000 jobs.

My Democratic colleagues and I are committed to addressing our economic challenges head-on, calling for an extension of the payroll tax cut—which has broad support from the American people—to strengthen the middle class, create jobs, and grow our economy. It’s time for Republicans to work with Democrats to deliver this critical tax relief to working families.

Improving our Community
On Monday, I was pleased to tour Richardson Apartments in Hayes Valley and deliver remarks celebrating the Sustainable Communities grant awarded to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to develop a San Francisco Bay Area Regional Prosperity Plan. Richardson Apartments is a prime example of what could be accomplished with the grant, which will create middle-income jobs and develop and preserve affordable housing in transit-served communities.

With the Sustainable Communities investment, we are reinforcing and expanding what are – and will continue to be – the building blocks of our prosperity: work, opportunity, a thriving middle class, and a strong community.

World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day affords us an opportunity to reflect on our progress in the fight against the global AIDS pandemic and to rededicate ourselves to ending the disease once and for all. Working together, we must continue to strengthen our national and international efforts to combat AIDS and other infectious diseases. We must work to achieve the Obama Administration’s goal of an AIDS-free generation. We must honor the memory of those we have lost and act on our hope, optimism, and determination to end the HIV/AIDS pandemic. To see my floor remarks on World AIDS Day, please visit my website.

America’s Cup
Last week, I was proud to work alongside Senator Feinstein, San Diego Congressman Bilbray, Mayor Lee and our local maritime unions to pass into law the America’s Cup Act of 2011, to permit certain eligible vessels to participate in the 2013 America’s Cup, hosted by our city.

Passing this bill will move us one step closer to ensuring the success of the 34th America’s Cup, which will showcase the natural beauty of the San Francisco Bay, spotlight the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of San Francisco and bring thousands of jobs and more than $1 billion in economic activity to the Bay Area.
