Standing up for Working Americans, Fighting to End HIV/AIDS
Standing up for Working Americans
On Wednesday, I was pleased to visit multiple small businesses on a Merchant Walk in Noe Valley to discuss House Democrats’ commitment to America’s small businesses—including fighting and succeeding in continuing the payroll tax cut for 160 million working Americans. This critical extension will inject demand and strengthen sales to local businesses that are critical to the success of America's small businesses.
Congress must pass legislation to develop a long-term agreement to extend the payroll tax cut for the American people. House Democrats are calling on the GOP to take immediate action on this urgent priority instead of waiting until the last minute; narrowing the choices and taking us to a point of brinkmanship. We must provide certainty to America’s families and our economy.

Fighting to End HIV/AIDS
On Tuesday, Mayor Ed Lee released his supplemental budget, which includes $1.8 million for Ryan White HIV/AIDS services to offset severe Republican funding cuts for San Francisco and other urban areas. These cuts would have drastically affected San Francisco’s systems of care that people living with HIV/AIDS rely upon for access to medications and primary medical care.
Ryan White funded initiatives are saving lives. That’s why it was disappointing when the Bush Administration first enacted severe cuts in Ryan White investments to several jurisdictions, including San Francisco, and that’s why I’ve fought against these cuts. For several years, I worked successfully in a bipartisan way to roll back these destabilizing cuts and their potentially devastating impacts - restoring nearly $21 million since 2007.
Every step of the way in fighting these cuts, I have found a partner in the San Francisco Mayor’s Office. Beginning with Mayor Newsom and continued by Mayor Lee, our city’s leadership has been determined to help local care organizations fill the gap. I commend Mayor Lee, along with Supervisors David Campos, Scott Wiener, Christina Olague and members of the San Francisco HIV/AIDS Planning Council for their continued leadership in this fight.
You're Invited!
Join the Office of Congresswoman Pelosi, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the San Francisco LGBT Community Center for an LGBT Listening Session on the Affordable Care Act.
Last year, President Obama issued a Memorandum directing HHS to make recommendations with respect to health and human services issues that affect LGBT individuals and their families. On April 1, 2011, HHS released these recommendations and the department is well on its way to implementing the 2011 recommendations and has begun work on developing a set of 2012 recommendations. To that end, we invite you to provide input on potential recommendations during this listening session.
