Saving Teachers' Jobs and Helping Seniors and Children; Fighting for Marriage Equality

Saving Teachers' Jobs and Helping Seniors and Children
On Thursday, the Senate passed legislation to deliver critical funding to states and local communities and create and save 290,000 American jobs – including 13,500 teacher positions in California and 150,000 police officers, firefighters, nurses, and private sector jobs across the nation.

With this action, Senate Republicans’ tactics of delay and obstruction will no longer deny states and communities the aid they need to create jobs and provide vital services to the American people. I have called Members of the House back to Washington next week to pass this urgent legislation and send it to the President’s desk without delay.

Democrats continue to support the resources needed for the education of our children, for the health of our families, and for the safety of our neighborhoods. Congressional Republicans demean educators and first responders as ‘special interests’ and prefer to see teachers, nurses, and police officers on the unemployment line instead of in our classrooms, in emergency rooms, or on the beat.

Fighting for Marriage Equality
I am extremely encouraged by the ruling announced on Wednesday in the case of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, which found that Proposition 8 violated both the due process and equal protection clauses of the U.S. Constitution. Proposition 8 has taken away individual rights and freedoms, and is a stain upon the California Constitution.

We must continue to fight against discriminatory marriage amendments and work toward the day when all American families are treated equally.
