Roundtable Discussion of the Recovery Act at Work in San Francisco
Last Friday, I led a roundtable discussion at the Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) in San Francisco to talk about initiatives funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and its impact on job creation in the Bay Area. JVS, a non-profit organization that administers workforce job training programs in San Francisco, received $1.3 million in Workforce Investment Act funds from the Recovery Act for its health care academy, job training assistance services, and green job corps program.

Congresswoman Pelosi meets with job training participants at JVS in San Francisco.

Through JVS, students gain basic jobs skills, vocational training, and internships. They are able to receive help in writing cover letters and resumes, and the tools to be self-sufficient for the long term. These initiatives illustrate how the Recovery Act is paying dividends for workers, families, and businesses in San Francisco and across the country.

This progress is part of a larger story of Recovery Act success nationwide. In May, our economy added 431,000 jobs and the unemployment rate fell. We added jobs in six of the last seven months. Private sector jobs are up nearly half-a-million jobs this year —in stark contrast to the Bush Administration record of losing more than 670,000 private sector jobs in eight years. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Recovery Act was responsible for creating 2.8 million jobs in the first three months of the year. The CBO projects 3.7 million jobs could be attributed to the Recovery Act by the end of September.
