Honoring the Victims of Tucson
With great sadness, the House of Representatives came together this week to honor Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, her staff, and her constituents who were victims of the horrific shooting in Arizona. We introduced a resolution in support of Congresswoman Giffords and the others who remain in the hospital recovering, and in remembrance of the six who tragically lost their lives - Christina Taylor Green, Dorothy Morris, John Roll, Phyllis Schneck, Dorwan Stoddard, and Gabriel Zimmerman.

capitolstaffThe House community joins in a moment of silence to honor the victims of the senseless tragedy in Tucson, Arizona.

A businesswoman, state legislator, and brilliant Member of Congress, Congresswoman Giffords brought the thinking and leadership of a new generation to Washington. We will long continue to be blessed by her ideas and look forward to when she is present with us again in Congress.

It is especially tragic that this attack took place during an activity that reflects the best of our democratic tradition: a representative of the people, Gabby Giffords and her staff were hearing directly from the Arizona men and women she represents at an event called “Congress on Your Corner.”

This resolution reminds us of the urgent need to uphold our democratic values, to treat one another with courtesy and respect, and to act – as Congresswoman Giffords has always done and always will do – in a manner that reflects the best of American leadership.

In this hour of anguish, we seek renewed commitment to hope, to civility, and to peace among the American people.

Remembering Haiti
This Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti, which took the lives of tens of thousands and left more than a million homeless. Today, the Haitian people continue to combat a series of challenges, from an ongoing cholera epidemic to political violence to neighborhoods still left in ruin. On this solemn anniversary, let us uphold our responsibility to the victims of the earthquake and rededicate ourselves to the promise made by President Obama: that Haiti would not be forgotten or forsaken.

Welcoming New San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee
This week, San Francisco welcomed its new mayor – former City Administrator Edwin Lee. A long-time public servant, Mayor Lee is making history as the city’s first Asian-American mayor. I look forward to working with Mayor Lee and the Board of Supervisors to promote economic growth and prosperity in the many diverse neighborhoods of San Francisco.
