Honoring the Victims of Oak Creek
Honoring the Victims of Oak Creek
Our thoughts and prayers rest with the families, friends, and loved ones of those killed in Oak Creek. The devastating actions of this lone gunman have no place in our country and in our society. The shooting was not simply an assault on a single congregation of Sikhs; it was an offense against peaceful, innocent people. All Members of Congress offer our condolences to the victims of this heinous act and to the Sikh community, and we pledge to work with local leaders and authorities to offer our support and assistance during this difficult time.
Congresswoman Pelosi joins Anthea Hartig, Executive Director of the California Historical Society, Trudy Schafer, Director of Programs at the California League of Women Voters, and the San Francisco Girls Chorus at the California Historical Society “Legends of California” awards ceremony. Congresswoman Pelosi was honored by the society for her 25 years of public service.
Fighting for a Healthier America
“Powering Healthier Communities” is the theme of the 2012 National Health Center Week, celebrated every second week in August. On Wednesday, I was pleased to join the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium (SFCCC) in celebrating their 30th anniversary. For 30 years, SFCCC has treated patients and saved lives – providing care to 92,000 patients last year alone and setting the standard for preventive care with PHASE, to Prevent Heart Attacks and Strokes Every day. This coalition of clinics and community health centers shares the fundamental belief behind our national drive for health reform: that health care must be a right, not a privilege, for all Americans.
In San Francisco, our clinics, our city government, and our local medical leaders came together to build a model for reform. With the Affordable Care Act, we expanded on that work and applied the same principles to our national health system: promoting innovation, prevention, and wellness. With health reform in place, and with the SFCCC continuing its extraordinary work on the ground, quality, affordable care is going to start to become a reality for the uninsured and the underserved, for the middle class, and for every American.
America COMPETES
House Democrats are committed to creating prosperity through science and innovation, reasserting our economic and technological leadership throughout the world in the decades to come, and giving future generations greater opportunity to achieve the American Dream. Five years ago, we toured the country to hear what Congress could do to help our nation's innovators stay competitive on a global stage. The America COMPETES Act, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this week, was passed by Democratic majorities in 2007. This key legislation, strengthened and reauthorized again in 2010, will help ensure our nation’s global economic competitiveness for generations to come—through a new emphasis on math, science, engineering, and technology education, and a renewed commitment to basic research.
