Honoring San Francisco Student Veterans; Ending the War in Iraq
Honoring San Francisco Student Veterans
Yesterday, I was proud to join student veterans at San Francisco State University (SFSU) to discuss the Post 9/11 GI Bill – restoring the promise of a full, four-year scholarship for our Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their dependents.
Congresswoman Pelosi meets with student veterans and SFSU President Robert Corrigan to discuss the new GI Bill.
Educating our nation’s veterans is a cost of war, and it is a promise we make to our troops for their courageous service to our country. At SFSU, nearly 500 students are benefitting from post 9/11 GI Bill benefits. Across the country, 300,000 veterans and their families have pursued a degree through this initiative.
We can never fully repay the debt of gratitude we owe to the brave men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform. But we can – and we must – honor the service of all of our veterans, as well as the sacrifice of each of their families, by ensuring they receive state-of-the-art medical care, get a full four-year college education, have a better shot at a good job, and move toward the brighter future they have earned.
Ending the War in Iraq
This week, President Obama marked the end of combat operations in Iraq. By keeping his promise to responsibly end this war, we are moving closer to the day when Iraq’s future rests solely in the hands of the Iraqi people.
We open this new chapter knowing that American troops remain on the ground – advising, assisting, and training Iraq’s security personnel. Our nation thanks those in uniform who have served in Iraq – and those who continue to bear any burden in the service of our country, including the approximately 100,000 troops serving in Afghanistan.
