Focusing on Job Creation
After over 200 days in the majority, House Republicans have yet to pass a single bill to put Americans back to work and have voted 10 times against Democratic initiatives to create jobs. They even brought our country to the brink of default and economic catastrophe in order to protect tax breaks for Big Oil, companies that ship jobs overseas, and the wealthiest Americans.

My colleagues and I will continue to work to address the number one priority of America’s families: creating jobs. Helping our small businesses and entrepreneurs attract customers, expand, and hire will grow our economy and help reduce the deficit. We are committed to revitalizing our economy while continuing to hold true to our values of protecting and strengthening Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

Fighting for the Health of all Americans
This Thursday, I was honored to receive the California Federal Advocacy Leadership Award from the American Cancer Society. From early in my career in Congress, I have fought to increase funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), doubling federal funding for the organization and including an additional $10 billion in investments for the NIH under the Recovery Act. In San Francisco, we are proud that UCSF is the largest public recipient in the nation of NIH funds – and that the UCSF Cancer Center at Mission Bay will be second to none.

The Affordable Care Act holds insurance companies accountable to keep premiums down and prevent denials of care and coverage; including for pre-existing conditions. Under the historic health insurance reform law, companies can no longer place a lifetime cap on cancer patients, while younger patients may stay on their parents’ plan until age 26. These provisions will help to ensure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care and significantly reduce long-term health care costs.
