Fighting for Your Priorities
Last week, House Republicans passed their budget, which ends the Medicare guarantee for seniors in spite of overwhelming opposition from the American people. I stood with every Democrat in the House and voted against this irresponsible plan that does nothing to create jobs and benefits the wealthiest few at the expense of our seniors, children and middle class families.

Their proposed budget:

* Gives an additional $1 trillion in tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires
* Preserves tax breaks for Big Oil, even as we remember the one-year anniversary of the disastrous BP oil spill.
* Protects tax breaks for corporations shipping American jobs overseas.

As Republicans claim that we all must share the burden of reducing the deficit, they want to spend your tax dollars on their agenda. Just this week, it was revealed that Speaker John Boehner is spending up to half a million dollars in taxpayer money to hire former Bush Administration Solicitor General Paul D. Clement to defend the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act at $520 an hour. I have repeatedly pushed Speaker Boehner to make public the cost to taxpayers after the U.S. Justice Department said its lawyers would no longer defend DOMA in court.

My Democratic colleagues and I will continue to fight for the number one priority of the American people: the creation of jobs.

Earth Day
Today we celebrate the 41st Earth Day. While we have made great strides in previous decades toward our goals, the struggle to protect our environment continues.

1906 Earthquake Anniversary
This week marked the 105th anniversary of San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake. We remember the pioneer spirit that propelled the people of San Francisco to rebuild our City stronger than before.

We can also take this opportunity to ask whether we are prepared for another natural disaster, such as the recent tragedy in Japan. The United States continues to send assistance to Japan’s communities as they confront the aftermath. You can make sure your friends and family are prepared by visiting San Francisco’s preparedness website 72hours.org.
