Fighting for San Francisco's Seniors
Fighting for San Francisco’s Seniors
House Republicans continue to support a plan to end Medicare as we know it; raising costs on our nation’s seniors and reducing their benefits. In San Francisco, their plan would:
- Eliminate new preventive care benefits for 97,000 Medicare beneficiaries in San Francisco.
- Force 97,000 Medicare beneficiaries in San Francisco who are currently enrolled in traditional Medicare to pay thousands of dollars more in premiums to remain in traditional Medicare after Medicare becomes a voucher program.
- Reduce coverage for 39,700 Medicare beneficiaries who rely on Medicaid to supplement their Medicare coverage, potentially denying them over $1.39 billion in health benefits.
- Place 91,000 district seniors at increased risk of fraud, scams, and elder abuse by cutting as much as $6 billion in funding for federal consumer protection and law enforcement.
Please be assured that I will fight alongside my Democratic colleagues to prevent these extreme cuts from occurring. Congress should be working to strengthen Medicare, not weaken it. To learn more about how the GOP plan will affect San Francisco’s seniors, please click here.
Congresswoman Pelosi, President George H.W. Bush, and Mayor Art Agnos tour areas affected by the devastating Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989.
Great California ShakeOut
Twenty-three years after the fateful Loma Prieta earthquake, we remember images of devastation and destruction; the delayed start to Game 3 of the World Series between two Bay Area teams; and the struggle to recover. Yesterday, with those memories fresh in our minds, over 9 million Californians from across our state took part in the largest earthquake drill in the history of our nation. Disaster preparedness starts with you: for more information on how to keep you and your family safe in an earthquake, please visit my website or our city’s 72hours.org webpage.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
As we mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it is a time to rededicate ourselves to the goal of ending violence against all those affected by domestic violence: whether it be our women and children, men or seniors. No one should have to live in fear in their own home. Domestic violence is never a private matter and as a community we all must continue to work together to eliminate these acts of violence from our society.
As a proud sponsor of the original Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), I believe VAWA is a remarkable and important piece of legislation that deserves the continued support of Congress. For nearly 20 years, VAWA has strengthened communities and provided critical, life-saving support to victims of violence. The time has come for House Republicans to stop blocking a fully-inclusive VAWA and join House Democrats to reauthorize – and strengthen – the Violence Against Women Act.
If you or anyone you know is suffering from domestic violence, please know that help is available to you: call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1.800.799.SAFE. Have You Been Tested?
Today is National Mammography Day. On this day, and throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women at risk for the disease are encouraged to make a mammography appointment and learn more about what they can do to prevent and detect breast cancer. To find out if you are at risk for breast cancer, please visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website.
