Ensuring our Security and Protecting our Privacy
Ensuring our Security and Protecting our Privacy
Last night, I voted against legislation that would extend some of the most controversial and troubling aspects of the Patriot Act. House Republicans failed to seize the opportunity to enact measures and improvements needed to preserve Americans’ privacy and to incorporate oversight and compliance with the law.
Our first responsibility is to ensure the security of the American people. Our intelligence and law enforcement professionals deserve all of the tools and resources they need to keep our families safe as they balance security and our civil liberties.
Moving forward, we must ensure that we can protect the American people, and protect and defend the Constitution.
Honoring our Military Families on Memorial Day
On Memorial Day, we honor our men and women in uniform who have sacrificed their lives in defense of our nation and the security of the American people. Currently, more than 27,000 Californians are serving around the world—many of them deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Memorial Day is a time to remember their service and sacrifice and renew our commitment to keep our promises to our nation’s troops, their families, and veterans.
Senate Votes on Budget that Ends Medicare
Despite Americans’ rejection of this irresponsible plan that ends Medicare, cuts benefits, increases costs and put insurance companies in charge of seniors’ health care, Republicans in the Senate voted to support the plan on Wednesday. Democrats will continue to work to balance our budget and reduce the deficit, but never on the backs of seniors and the middle class.
