Creating New Small Business Jobs in San Francisco; Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Creating New Small Business Jobs in San Francisco
On Monday, I joined Small Business Administrator Elizabeth Echols and local small business owners at the opening of The Culinary Edge, a new small business in San Francisco that provides integrated culinary services to the restaurant and foodservice industries. With a loan from the Small Business Administration, founder Aaron Noveshen was able to make his entrepreneurial dream a reality.

Democrats in Congress are working to ensure small businesses have the resources they need to prosper in this economy. After weeks of Senate Republican obstruction, the Senate finally passed the Small Business Jobs and Credit Act, which the House passed in June by a vote of 241 - 182. This legislation will create jobs through a new $30 billion lending fund for small- and medium-sized community banks, and could leverage up to $300 billion in lending. It includes tough performance-based incentives to make sure that these banks lend to small business. I look forward to sending this bill to President Obama for his signature.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the contributions of the Hispanic community to our history, heritage, and culture. During this month, we reflect on the many challenges facing Hispanic Americans – challenges shared by all Americans. The Democratic-led Congress has acted to build a future of economic security for Latino families and all Americans. We have worked to create and save jobs, strengthen small businesses, and extend health insurance to nearly 9 million Latinos currently lacking coverage.
To honor Hispanic Americans and our history as a bastion for immigrants from across the globe, we must pass comprehensive immigration reform. I urge Senators from both parties to follow Senator Reid’s leadership to pass the DREAM Act as a first step toward reaching that goal.
