Americans’ Top Priority: Creating Jobs
Despite broad, bipartisan support, House Republican leaders continue to block legislation that would level the playing field for American workers and hold accountable countries, like China, that create an unfair trade advantage by manipulating their currency – legislation that would help create an estimated 1 to 1.5 million jobs here in America. House Democrats are committed to creating jobs, bolstering small businesses, and growing our economy. Our “Make It In America” initiative will help revitalize our manufacturing sector, rebuild our roads and bridges, and make sure our trading partners pay their fair share.
President Obama’s American Jobs Act will help American small businesses grow and hire, rebuild America, and support nearly 400,000 education jobs; preventing layoffs and putting tens of thousands more teachers and other education workers back in the classroom. Congress must act now to create jobs, strengthen our middle class, and expand our economy.
Bringing Home American Troops from Iraq
Last Friday, President Obama announced that all U.S. troops will leave Iraq by the end of the year. I commend the President for a promise made and a promise kept, honoring the U.S.-Iraq Security Agreement and the wishes of the American people.
This announcement brings us toward the completion of a mission for which our men and women in uniform and their families have made enormous sacrifices. We thank them for their dedication, and we will never forget those we lost. Just as they commit to leave no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind when they come home – honoring their service with the economic opportunities and benefits they were promised.

Changes to the Home Affordable Refinancing Program
On Monday, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the federal agency that oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, announced changes to the Home Affordable Refinancing Program (HARP). This program helps homeowners who owe more on their mortgage than their house is worth (known as “negative equity” or “being underwater”) refinance to a lower interest rate. The changes will make it easier for severely underwater homeowners to refinance their mortgages. To be eligible, homeowners must be current on their mortgage, and their mortgage must be owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. The FHFA website provides instructions on how homeowners can determine eligibility.
