The Voice of The People
When Women Succeed, America Succeeds
This week, I joined San Francisco women leaders, workers, small-business owners and disability advocates at City Hall to commemorate Women’s Equality Day and the 106th anniversary of the certification of the 19th Amendment. Generations of courageous women organized, demonstrated and sacrificed to secure the right to vote. They were told women would have to wait. Women did not wait.
Today, we honor their courage by protecting the rights they fought so hard to secure. The SAVE America Act would impose new documentary requirements to register to vote, threatening to disenfranchise millions of eligible Americans—including 70 million married women whose names no longer match their birth certificates. We cannot allow new barriers to silence women’s voices or turn back more than a century of progress.

Defending the Right to Vote
The right to vote is the foundation of our Democracy. Five years ago this week, House Democrats passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the protections of the landmark Voting Rights Act and combat voter suppression across the nation. Senate Republicans shamefully blocked it, leaving those protections vulnerable to the very attacks we are confronting today.
This week, the Supreme Court cleared the way for President Trump to move forward with his attempt to restrict mail-in voting and seize control over Americans’ ability to cast their ballots. This assault on voting rights makes the need to carry forward John Lewis’ legacy more urgent than ever. Congress must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and ensure every American can make their voice heard.

Cost of Bad Governance
For 25 years, Republicans have irresponsibly showered the wealthy with tax breaks, driving our nation’s debt higher and higher. Now, with the national debt surpassing $40 trillion, Republicans are once again asking working families to pay the price for their giveaways to the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations.
Their idea of fiscal responsibility is cutting health care that families depend on while protecting tax breaks for those who need them least. Democrats will continue fighting for a fairer economy that lowers costs, protects Americans’ health care and puts working families first.
