Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today announced $4.1 million in Department of Labor funding for the Treasure Island Job Corps Center in San Francisco Bay. These funds will enable the Center to construct a one-story physical fitness center and help provide a well-rounded education and training program. The Center is expected to serve more than 800 individuals per year and prepare them for careers in a wide array of occupations, including residential and commercial building maintenance, health care, and basic and advanced culinary arts.
"This Job Corps Center will play a vital role in preparing our youth for the work world and in educating, training, and placing our children in occupations that will provide them with living wages and serve important business needs," Pelosi said. "I commend the Clinton Administration for making our Job Corps Center a model for the entire nation and Mayor Willie Brown for his cooperation and leadership in bringing this project to fruition."
As a Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor-Health and Human Services-Education, Pelosi has worked to increase funding to educate and train young adults. She has also worked hard to ensure that the Treasure Island Job Corps Center will serve as a model for achieving this goal.
