Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Joins Candlelight Vigil Outside Chinese Embassy To Commemorate the Eighth Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) remembered the victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre in a candlelight vigil outside the Chinese Embassy in Washington last night. The vigil marked the eighth anniversary of the Chinese military's June 4th assault on pro-democracy demonstrators. Since 1989, China's rulers have effectively silenced all internal dissent.

"Eight years ago, the world was shocked as people witnessed the brutal suppression of individual freedom and liberty in Tiananmen Square -- a massacre which is still not acknowledged by the authoritarian leaders of China. The images of that massacre were seared into our consciousness. We must not forget those who lost their lives for the cause of freedom. We must not forget those still imprisoned who have lost their liberty in pursuit of this basic human right," Pelosi said.

Rep. Pelosi took part in the candlelight vigil with members of Washington's Chinese dissident and pro-democracy community. "It is said that the most excruciating punishment that captors inflict on political prisoners is to tell them that no one remembers or cares about their cause, that they are forgotten," Pelosi said. "Every time we raise our voices we give strength to these brave men and women, and we keep hope and freedom alive."

Among the organizations participating in the vigil were the Independent Federation of Chinese Students, the Federation of Overseas Hong Kong Chinese, the Chinese Benevolent Association, The China Strategic Institute, and the International Campaign for Tibet.
