Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) joined with Congressman Barney Frank today as an original co-sponsor of his Medical Use of Marijuana Act. The legislation would end Federal restrictions on the medical use of marijuana which currently run counter to new state laws in California and Arizona. "The opportunity to ease the suffering of people who are enduring difficult and sometimes painful therapies is an opportunity we can not ignore," Pelosi said.
The bill would move marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule II drug, a change that would acknowledge the medical uses of the drug, and allow for states to determine its medical uses without being in conflict with Federal law. The bill would also remove barriers to biomedical research on the safety and efficacy of marijuana in relieving pain and wasting syndrome.
