On Rupert Murdoch's Decision to Spike a Book Critical of the Chinese Government

March 4, 1998

For some time, it has been clear that the long arm of Chinese censorship is reaching across the world. Rupert Murdoch is a willing accomplice to this practice, suppressing the truth about human rights in China. His action to kill Sir Christopher Patten's book is not isolated and is part of a pattern.

Rupert Murdoch is also an owner of many leading newspapers -- the silence of these publications regarding the truth about the Chinese regime has been deafening.

Rupert Murdoch's action is shameful, but fits well in his practice of offering book deals to the daughter of Deng Xiaoping, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, attempting to enrich and influence these opinion makers while decisions affecting his interests were imminent.
