1.5 Million Pounds of Disaster Relief to Leave Pier 80 Tomorrow Morning and Friday
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today commended the community effort that has resulted in the first shipment of disaster relief to be sent from the Bay Area to the victims of Hurricane Mitch. "Once again San Francisco leads the way. The Port of San Francisco and Veronica Sanchez (Manager, Governmental Affairs, Port of San Francisco) are to be commended. Their persistence, which matched the generosity of the people of the San Francisco Bay Area, has made it possible for these important supplies to reach the victims of Hurricane Mitch," Pelosi said.
During the past two months, Rep. Pelosi was part of the effort to secure transportation of these much needed supplies to Central America, contacting Secretary of Defense William Cohen, Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater and USAID Administrator Brian Atwood.
Hundreds of local volunteers, active military personnel from Travis Air Force Base and the Navy Reserve have worked to catalogue and prepare the cargo for shipment to Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador. Volunteer longshoremen will load the two vessels.
The estimated value of food, medical supplies and other essential items is estimated at close to $1 million.
