Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today announced a $12.5 million Labor Department contract for the Treasure Island Job Corps facility. "This contract represents an investment in the people of San Francisco and the reuse of the former Naval Station at Treasure Island, a valuable resource for the City," Pelosi said.
The contract is for the renovation and redesign of seven existing buildings on the site, including the dormitory, classrooms and vocational training workshops. The work will be done by a Bay Area firm.
The San Francisco Job Corps Center already operates an advanced culinary arts training program for 120 residential students on Treasure Island. It will enroll 850 young men and women in academic and vocational classes like carpentry, masonry and child care. "By adding resources, Job Corps can expand to serve the needs of disadvantaged young people who need job skills in order to be competitive in today's marketplace. This is an opportunity to lift people out of poverty and into self-sufficiency," Pelosi said.
Rep. Pelosi is a member of the Labor, Health and Human Services committee which funds the Department of Labor. Pelosi commended Mayor Willie Brown and Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman for their support in making this grant a reality. "I want to thank Mayor Brown and Secretary Herman for their work on this project. It will make the Treasure Island Job Corps Center a model for the rest of the nation."
