Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today announced a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Justice Department's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program for the San Francisco Police Department. Pelosi said, "This grant will have a direct impact on helping the San Francisco Police Department reduce crime in our city. It constitutes the federal share for the support of 20 additional police officers for the next three years."
Pelosi added, "I commend the Clinton Administration for creating the innovative programs that allow for increased community policing and safter streets." Funding under the COPS Universal Hiring Program (UHP) are designed to cover up to 75% of the total annual salary and benefits of each new officer, up to a maximum of $75,000 per officer.
