Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Petaluma) have successfully included $27 million for the seismic retrofit of the Golden Gate Bridge as part of the House version of the Building Efficient Surface Transportation Equity Act (BESTEA). "This is a major investment in the future of our local economy," Pelosi said. "The Golden Gate Bridge carries 130,000 vehicles per day. Our ability to do a seismic retrofit now, gives us some measure of protection against the devastating effects of an earthquake later."
Rep. Woolsey, whose district includes the northern part of the span was pleased with the outcome. "The bridge is the critical link between the North Coast and San Francisco, the gateway to the Pacific, and a national treasure that deserves our protection for commuters today and for generations to come," Woolsey said.
Rep. Pelosi also successfully included:
"These projects are significant because they address the transportation and environmental concerns of our thriving downtown business community and our neighborhoods," Pelosi said.
General Manager of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District Carney J. Campion offered his thanks to the members of the Bridge's delegation for their work on this project. "I appreciate the leadership of the delegation for securing the federal funding that is vital to the continuation of this much-needed project."
BESTEA is expected on the House floor for a vote next week. It will then go to conference with the Senate.
