Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), a Member of the House Appropriations Committee, today announced a $29.8 million installment on the federal government's $750 million commitment to the completion of the extension of BART from Colma to the San Francisco International Airport. "This grant is the result of the Full Funding Grant Agreement which was signed by President Clinton last year. Extending BART to the airport will improve the quality of life for the Bay Area as we move into the 21st Century," Pelosi said.
The Department of Transportation signed a Full Funding Grant Agreement for the project on July 1, 1997. This agreement was needed for BART to enter into contracts for construction. "With this Full Funding Grant Agreement, BART has the commitment of the Administration and the Congress to see this project through to its completion," Pelosi said.
This year's installment will be used, in part, to fund the design and construction of the Milbrae Station. So far, the combined state and federal contribution to the $1.2 billion project totals $151.6 million. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2001.
