Pelosi: 'Tax Bill President Signed is Oblivious to the Needs of Real Families'

May 28, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after President Bush signed the Republican tax bill today at a White House signing ceremony:

"The tax package President Bush signed today is the wrong package for America. It is entirely oblivious to the needs of real families. In the short term, it will not get the economy moving again and will not make up for anywhere near the 2.7 million jobs lost since the President took office.

"And in the long run, it will hurt the economy and force working families to pay for exploding federal deficits over the next 10 years. These tax breaks mortgage our children’s futures instead of investing further in their health and education.

"Yesterday, without a ceremony, President Bush signed a bill allowing the federal government to increase its debt to a record $7.4 trillion. Our children will be stuck with this bill. Is that why there was no signing ceremony -- because the President did not want the country to see that he is indebting our children for years to come?"
