"While Congressional business prevents me from being with you in person today, I wholeheartedly join you in honoring the American heroes who risked their lives on September 11th to save others. Sadly, 343 emergency responders gave the ultimate sacrifice while rescuing victims of the terrorist attacks. By issuing the Heroes of 2001 stamp and with proceeds benefiting the victims families, the United States Postal Service is providing a great service to our country and a testament to those first responders who died or were disabled during that tragic event.
September 11th shook our country, but it did not shake our spirit. God has blessed us with the courage of friends and neighbors including the hundreds of firemen and other emergency responders who plunged into crumbling buildings to help people escape. Led by the compassion and magnificent spirit of the American people, the amazing cities of New York and Washington D.C. are already rising from the ashes like the great Phoenix to be stronger than ever.
I am proud of the United States Postal Service for supporting the families of our fallen and injured heroes. Today's celebration of the issuance of the Heroes of 2001 semipostal stamp is another example of the strength and unity of the American people to help each other when our nation and way of life are threatened. I join you today in not only mourning those we have lost, but in rejoicing for what our country possesses -- hope, courage, and strength."
